Why I adore children's books...
My happiest childhood memories are conjured up when I remember my mother reading ‘Edward the Emu’, ‘Angelina Ballerina’, ‘Burglar Bill’, ‘The Jolly Postman’ and ‘The Borrowers' every evening. I will never forget the wonder of imagining myself with the pages of those magical worlds.
I constantly note down ideas for new stories, and endlessly sketch and draw, trying to work how how to tell a particular aspect of a story. Ideas come from mundane moments observed during sketching that arouse my curiosity, to responding to a hard to explain quality or spirit of a particular place. I ambition is for my audience to come away feeling something real for them. If a book is instantly forgettable, it has failed.
I graduated from an MA Illustration course at Falmouth University, and have been working as a freelance illustrator since 2017. My first children's book, (which I've written and illustrated) is called 'Cornish Mice and the Treasure Garden', and is due to be published by TorMark in 2021. I'm passionate about children't books, both writing and illustrating. I'm brimming with ideas for new stories. I would love to work on a wide variety of children's book titles on diverse subjects. I'm also interested in illustrating stories by other writers.
